A weekend of flight offers was the reason we booked a trip to Foz do Iguaçu. We didn’t have much time, but it was definitely worth it.

Our hostel was downtown, but it was pretty easy to go to the waterfalls. The same bus that goes to the airport goes to the national park.

People had told me before it’s better to visit the Brazilian side first and now I can only agree.

There was a big line and some people offering raincoats. It’s better to buy the raincoats at the park’s official store. The price is the same, but the quality is better. The entrance fee varies. As a Brazilian, I paid R$ 22,70. People from countries of Mercosul pay R$ 31,70 and the fee for foreigners from other countries is R$ 37,70.

The double deck buses take a road with a few stops, where tours are offered. We didn’t have much time, so we didn’t do those tours, but I want to go back for the bike tour at Trilha do Poço Preto and the Macuco Safari.

We stopped at Trilha das Cataratas. It’s just a 1,2 km walk with great views that just get better and better. A fact: you WILL get wet! So it’s important to have something to protect cameras and other things that can’t handle water. ;)

In front of Parque Nacional do Iguaçu there is the Parque das Aves (Birds Park). From the road one can already see the ostriches.

In the afternoon, we went to Paraguay. We took a bus in front of the bus station and crossed the Ponte da Amizade (Friendship Bridge). Unless you want to buy electronics and make-up I don’t recommend going there. There isn’t much to see in Ciudad del Este and it’s quite irritating how they want you to buy something.

On Sunday, we went to the Argentinean side. The bus from Foz do Iguaçu goes to the bus station from where the busses to the national park leave. They don’t accept reais, only pesos! Luckily, close to the bus station there are some ATMs.

They also have different prices for Argentineans, Mercosul tourists and other foreigners. I paid 70 pesos (about 30 reais). There are many tours, but not on the day I was there. The water level was so high, they cancelled most of the tours. And they were more expensive than the ones on the Brazilian side.

We took the train to Cataratas Station and started our walk to the upper circuit. The view is incredible! The lower circuit is closer to the waterfalls. We wrapped our bags in our raincoats and got soaked. Some people walked around in bathing suits. The feeling is just great!

On our way back it started raining quite heavily. Although we were wet already it didn’t feel really nice. We decided to eat something and once again it’s important to have pesos. They accept reais, dollars and even euros at some places, but the exchange currencies are just horrible. They charged 0.50 real = 1 peso when the actual currency is about 1 real = 2.4 pesos.

Going on, we took the last train to the Devil’s Throat. It’s a nice walk above the river and the Devil’s Throat is simply breathtaking! And it’s even a little bit scaring how close the path gets to the falls. The water goes down with such strength and the drops come up again like a drizzle.

On our way back, we found out the buses from Puerto Iguazu to Foz do Iguaçu run until 7 pm. So, we took a remisse to go to the border line and then a cab to our hostel.

Another thing on my to-do-list for the next time I’m in Foz is visiting Itaipu. It’s the biggest power plant in Brazil and I’ve heard the tour is also very interesting.

I'd say that three to four days is the best. Brazilian side and Birds Park on the first day, Argentinean side on the second and Itaipu on the last one. Add the fourth day if you want to relax a bit or go shopping in Paraguay. ;)

In January, for the first time, my family traveled abroad with me. My mom always said she wanted to visit Buenos Aires and after some work (hard one actually), my sister and I convinced her it was time to make it happen.

It was my second time in the city, what was good because I already had a good idea of what was interesting to see, what they’d like and also how much time we needed for some of the attractions.

We only had four days, but we managed to see a lot anyway. Our first stop was at Plaza Francia. We went to Recoleta and to the street market they have on weekends. Just crossing the street, there is the Floralis Generica.

On our way back to the hotel, we walked around the neighbouhood Recoleta, passing in front of Brazilian and French Embassies. We walked on Cerrito Street, passed in front of Teatro Colón and went until Av Corrietes.

At Avenida 9 de Julio, close to the obelisk, look up. On the top of one of the buildings, there is a little house. I learnt that the man who built it was too lazy to walk home from work every day and just made his life easier moving to a house on the top of the place where he worked. But searching for more info, I read that the salesman Don Rafael Diaz actually wanted to have a little cottage in heaven.

Going on, we reached Casa Rosada. On weekend, they have a guided tour each ten minutes. It was in Spanish, but not much was spoken.

Second day was a bit slower. We took some nice walk on Puerto Madero. It’s a very fancy neighbourhood. Close to it, there is the Reserva Ecologica, where I took a very nice walk during my first trip.

Next stop was San Telmo. One can’t miss the street market on Sundays. There is a nice atmosphere and also some cool stuff to buy. I got my picture with Mafalda (Chile x Defensa) and another in front of the smallest house in Buenos Aires (San Lorenzo x Defensa).

This time I took a picture of the wind couple.

Lunch was at Habibi. Great arab food!

Being at San Telmo, I really needed to stop at Walrus bookshop, a very nice second-hand for books in english.

We had a shopping day. Many Brazilians travel to Buenos Aires just for this. And I didn’t do it during my first trip. This time, I found some cool stuff. There are many cool designers there, especially in Palermo.

El Ateno bookshop is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. It used to be a theater and nowadays one can have nice coffee and alfajor at the old stage.

The city is pretty flat, so it’s a great place to walk and just pay attention to the beautiful architecture. I took a nice zig-zag walk going down on Santa Fé Av., going up on Corrientes until the Congress and then down again on Avenida de Mayo and back to the hotel.

Café Tortoni is a nice place and has one of the best cheesecakes I’ve ever had. But the cappuccino isn’t any special.

P.S.: some pictures like the little house on the top of the building are missing because this is the second post I write about Buenos Aires.

I'm bad at keeping a blog. But I try anyway. I still want to write about last year's vacation (beautiful and tiny Ljubljana and breathtaking Croatia) and I promise these posts will be here in the future.

And I've traveled a bit during the last months.

Christmas was spent at the country side with my family, of course. Lazy days and lots of yummi fruits to eat.

I was three times in Rio de Janeiro and watched the new year arriving at Copacabana beach. We went to look for the king, Roberto Carlos. And I had my last night dancing samba at Mangueira's rehearsal. Beautiful!

Last weekend I was in Buenos Aires with my family. :)

Deutschland - Nürnberg

My original plans didn't include Germany, but I just couldn't resist. I really like the country and I wanted to meet some of my dear friends that I don't know when I'll be able to see again.

So, the trip started in Nürnberg, at Rock im Park. Great line-up: Rammstein (yeah!), Rise Against, Them Crooked Vultures, Kiss, Muse, Slayer, Motörhead, Alkaline Trio...

The festival area was quite close to the city, so we went downtown every day, also because another friend of mine was traveling with me and she didn't go to the fest. It's a very pretty city. I had been there in 2008 visiting a dear friend and it's nice to come back. Particularly, I prefer Nuremberg than Munich.

There is the Schöner Brunnen. There is a metal ring on the gate around the small tower and the story behind it is that an apprentice of blacksmith wanted to marry the daughter of his master. So, the father said "if you can make me a ring in which I can't see the binding, you can marry my daughter". So, he did it, he married the girl and the ring is on the gate for tourists and locals to find it, turn it three times and make a wish.

And the Ehekarussel is about the good and bad things of marriage. It starts when the man and the woman meet each other and there is romance. Then comes the marriage and kids and fights. It says "fights in marriage for eternity".

In 2009 I went to Buenos Aires for the first time. Before going there I gathered some interesting information about the city and things to do there. I’ve shared these tips with some friends and finally I’ve set myself to write this post. It’s going to be a long one.

WALKINGS

My friend Eva was living in Buenos Aires and gave me the tip about the walking tours. The first one I did started in the morning and was more historical and political. It starts in front of the Congress building and ends at the Obelisk on Avenida 9 de Julio.

The second one is called Aristocratic Buenos Aires and shows the rich part of the city. It starts at Plaza de San Martín, at Retiro neighbourhood and ends in front of the Recoleta cemetery (where Evita’s mausolea is located). At San Martín Square there is a monument for the soldiers that died in the Malvina or Folk Islands war between Argentina and England.

Both tours take about two hours and are in English.

On Sundays, there is a cool market in San Telmo. One can find antiques, clothes, souvenirs and other things to buy. But even for those not interested in buying things, it’s worthy to visit and walk around. There is live music and some interesting characters like the Wind Man (a guy dressed in a funny way as if the wind was blowing his clothes – when I was there, I didn’t see the Wind Woman, because she had just got a Wind Baby) and the tango dancers.
The open market goes from 10 am until more or less 5 pm.

The Pasaje San Lorenzo is a very tiny house that belonged to and ex-slave. I read one can do some guided tour inside, but it was closed when I was there.

Caminito is one of the most famous images from Buenos Aires. It’s pretty colourful and there are restaurants, tango shows and lots of souvenirs stores. I think one should go there and see it, but I don’t think it’s so cool.

Close to Caminito, there is the stadium from Boca Júniors, aka La Bombonera. There is a museum inside and they offer different tours: museum and field, only field, only museum. In front of it, there are many stores selling football shirts and mugs and so on.

Both Caminito and La Bombonera are located at La Boca neighbourhood.

Close to the Recoleta cemitery, there is the Centro Cultural Recoleta. It’s open from Monday through Friday, from 2 pm until 9 pm and on weekends, from 10 am until 9 pm. There was a Berlin bear when I was there. As I love Berlin, this put a big smile on my face.

Where the avenues meet and Avenida del Libertador turns into Avenida Figueroa Alcorta, there is the Floralis Generica. It’s a huge metal flower with “petals” that are closed during night time and open during the day. It was a gift from the architect Eduardo Catalano.

Puerto Madero is a modern harbor and a beautiful area for a walk. Close to it there is the Reserva Ecológica that’s also good for a walk and a nice place for a picnic, especially by the river.

Cólon Theater (at Cerrito Str.) and Palácio dos Tribunais (Lavalle Square) were closed probably because of the flu.

I didn’t visit these places, but I’ll write about them anyway. At Palermo neighbourhood, there is the Planetarium Galileu Galilei and the Jardin Botanico (Botanic Garden). The Jardin is open every day from 10 am until 6 pm and it’s for free.

MUSEUMS

Museu Nacional de Bellas Artes or National Museum of Fine Arts is pretty interesting. It’s at Avenida del Libertador, 1473. It’s open from Tuesday through Friday from 12:30 until 19:30 and on weekends from 9:30 until 19:30. And it’s for free.

Malba (Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires) is for Latin American art. It has more modern stuff. It’s at Avenida Figueroa Alcorta, 3415.

I wanted to see also the Museu de Arte Moderna in San Telmo, but because of the H1N1 gripe, it was closed. I also couldn’t go to the museum in Casa Rosada (the Pink House) at Plaza de Mayo.

FOOD

When it comes to food, Buenos Aires is well-known for steaks and I had heard from a friend of mine she realized she’ll be vegetarian for the rest of her life after going to BsAs. I went to two veggie restaurants there. Lotos wasn’t very good, but Spring was delicious.

Another option is the Arab restaurant Habib, in San Telmo.

At almost every corner of the city there is a Havana Café. Paradise!

BOOKS

I love to read and I was so happy to find Walrus bookstore at San Telmo. It’s a very good place to buy second-hand books in English. There are books in other languages as well, but most are in English.

El Ateneo is probably the most famous bookstore in the city. It used to be a theater and the building is so beautiful! At the back, where the stage used to be, there is a good café. Avenida Santa Fé, 1860.

MUSIC

La Bomba de Tiempo is a percussion group that makes very nice music. They play on Mondays and it’s normally very crowded.

SHOPPING

Córdoba and Florida streets are famous for their stores. At Called Florida there is also Galeria Pacifico, a shopping mall.

To write that I'm busy is no big news.
At the last post, I wrote about my vacation and I have to say it was simply great. Buenos Aires is lovely and I really want to go back. I will write a nice post with tips about the cool places I went to and the nice things I saw.
But right now I've got something bigger going on. After putting my final paper for the post-graduation course on hold for about one year, I'm working on it again. Today I had a meeting with my professor and she is very carried away with it.

The picture above is from El Ateneo bookstore in Buenos Aires. It was a theater and now it's the most famous bookstore in town with an amazing café. But my favourite is definitely Walrus Books.

I've been checking websites of turistic information about Buenos Aires and I really don't get why people say four or five days are enough to see the whole city. The more I check, the more I think I won't have enough time to see all that I want.

I'm day dreaming about vacation. Now, I only have to wait less than a month.

For the first time, I'm going to Buenos Aires and it's kind of funny that, after many years going to the same place, I'll be in a city where I actually have no friends. For the first time also, I'll be traveling with friends.

So far, my friends that have been there say I'll simply love the city. And I'm very curious and excited about exploring it.

Personally, I ~~hate~~ hated Carnival in Brazil. I ~~don't~~ didn't like the samba schools, the parades, the parties. The exception are the traditions in Recife and Olinda, but I think these are interesting and that's it.
But friends can convince us of doing unexpected things. This is how I ended up at a party organized by the Journalists Union, in Santos. It was on the beach (not my cup of tea either) and I still had lots of fun. Of course, this has nothing to do with the music they played there.
It was just really good to meet friends from college. It's been four years since I graduated and I haven't seen most of them during this time. It was so nice hearing the stories and knowing what they are doing.

What a stressful (work!) end of the year. I'm looking so forward to the holidays.
My friend from Berlin left today and in 10 days a friend from Amsterdam is coming. He'll do the same "tour" I did with another German friend who visited me last year. Christmas in the country side with family and New Year's Eve on the beach seeing the fireworks. I'll probably also make him jump seven waves. ;)

Tomorrow, I'll hand in the final work for my photo course. I wish I had done somethings differently, but all in all, I'm glad about it.

I had such a nice weekend with friends. On Saturday, I visited São Paulo's Pinacoteca. It's such a beautiful building with nice expositions (I saw wonderful black & white photos from Salvador in the 30's). It has a nice park to walk around and a café with a great coffee with cream.
On Sunday, I did a small photo tour in some areas downtown. First, we went to Mercado Municipal, that's big market with lots of different fruits and friendly people. We used the chance to practice taking portraits. After that, we went to Minhocão. That's actually an ugly bridge I see every day, as it's close to work. But on Sundays, it's closed for cars and it's crowded with people jogging, walking, biking and photographing as well.

What inspires you?

For sometime (much longer than I wish it was), I feel I have a lack of inspiration concerning photography. I'm still excited about it, I'm enjoying the course I'm taking, I have lots of fun taking photos at hardcore shows, but I feel like I used to be more creative. In my daily life, I used to notice much more things that would result in a cool photo. I know there is still so much to photograph just around me, but I feel like I just don't see those things. I know there are some blank periods, but mine is lasting way too long.
The crazy life I've been living plus some ups and downs play a big role in this. But I can't let it take over. So, another note to myself, tomorrow, I've got to leave home with my camera and try to really see things, not just look at them.

P.S.: Today I got a photo zine via post and it made my day. I was so happy when I saw it in my mailbox and the smile just got bigger as I checked the photos. Thanks to Jason Vaughn.

Today, I had my first session with a naked model. I was quite nervous before. I don't have experience with studio, I wanted to be creative and I couldn't take too long because other people had to shoot as well. But it went quite fine.
Next shooting at photo course will be flowers. After today, that should be a piece of cake.

Sometimes, I wish days would have more than 24 hours. I've got so many things to do: homework (German and French), selecting photos (as reference for next classes and my photos from shows for my semester project), get photos printed, writing some texts, writing a book (my final project for post-graduation course that I haven't even started and it's due until December).
I'll manage everything. I have to!

As I just had two French classes so far, I don't understand her lyrics very well. But I read about them and, because my mother tongue is Portuguese, I get some of the words. They are quite dirty. But she's funny, has a nice voice and the songs are cool.
It was worth getting home stinking (people smoked way too much in the venue) and going to bed just at 3 am (after washing and drying my hair). She rocks!

After seeing The Hives in Germany (I went to the festival to see Die Ärzte) I really got into the band. So, I was quite happy when I found out they were playing São Paulo a couple of weeks after I came back. I saw them again last Saturday and it was a great, great show. I hope I'll be lucky enough to see them again any time soon. I just wish I could had taken some photos, but I have no small camera and my SLR wasn't allowed inside without a press pass.

I want to write a bit more about my vacation, but I haven't had much time to sit down and focus.
The photo above is from Marienplatz, in Munich. And it also shows the towers from the Frauenkirche.
It was my first time in Munich and I was surprised to find out it's smaller than I imagined. I always hear so much about it and it's definitely one of the most important cities in Germany. So, I expected more than only 900 thousand inhabitants. In one afternoon, I had walked whole downtown.
The city has really beautiful buildings and it's so clean. But some people are quite stuck-up.

Last Saturday I saw a theater play with the text from a German company. Even though I know there is a big German community in São Paulo (including a German school on my street), I definitely wasn't expecting the play would be totally in German, with subtitles.
It was interesting.

The first time I was in Berlin I was kind of shocked. People shouting on the street and drunk men in the subway was totally not expected. It was winter and the city was gray and I didn't do that much.
Second time, it was summer but a cold and rainy one. And once again, I didn't do that much, but I started enjoying the city a bit more.
This year I fell in love with Berlin. I don't really know how to explain it, but I guess it's because this time I finally got the chance to explore it a bit more. I visited places where I hadn't been before and I met good people. And I want to go back.

The photo above was taken when I was arriving back home. As lots of people asked me during the trip how big São Paulo is, I thought a photo would be worth. There are about 11 million people living just in São Paulo. There are other cities around (everything is called Big São Paulo) and they must have about 20 million inhabitants together. São Paulo has 1.509 km2 and 1.000 km2 are urban areas.

About the title: Berlinerisch is one of my favourite German dialects. It means: São Paulo is big, isn't it?

i'm enjoying my last days of vacation.
i wasn't expecting much of this trip, but it turned out to be very good. i met friends (and i realized how many good friends i have here) and i met new cool people. so, far, i've been in frankfurt, saalfeld, jena, weimar, magdeburg (where i am right now, again), berlin, munich and nuremberg.
next wednesday, at this time, i'll be at work. the days passed faster than i thought they would.
i'll upload some photos on flickr when i'm back home.

Once I singed in a band. We were six girls and it was called One Day Kills.
The band was just a hobby, but we played some cool shows in Curitiba, Joinville, Rio de Janeiro, Cabo Frio and the Hardcore Festival in São Paulo, that was the biggest hardcore show back then.
The last show was in January 2002, and after that one of the girls moved to another city and the band was over because we knew it wouldn't be the same with someone else.
We even had two demo tapes very badly recorded. I have none left and it's a pity.
Some months ago, I got a request on myspace to add the band's profile. And the website is still online. hehe
I really had a good time back then.

Ouch - Part II

So, my second wisdom tooth is gone and I'll have a break from at least one year until the next surgeries. This time, it didn't hurt as much as before to remove it, although I heard some scary noises. But when the anesthesia was losing its effect, it hurt and I needed to take two painkillers.

Now, I'm on an ice-cream diet again. It's not so cool as it sounds because the weather is quite cold.

I always say the world seems to be such a small place sometimes. The dentist who did the surgeries is my friend's professor at a very important hospital here in São Paulo.

This is the time of one of my favourite typical parties. I guess I can translate it as Junish Party. The food is great with lots of candies made from peanuts, popcorn and corn. I just love it. There is a bonfire and lots of colour. This part can a bit exaggerated, but I still like it.
The music is not my cup of tea, but the typical dance is funny. It tells the story of a marriage. The girl got pregnant and the father forced the guy to marry. Telling it like this, doesn't sound so funny. But there is the bride, the groom, the priest, the girls father and the guests.
I danced it twice in my life. In kindergarten and at my last year in high school. The second time, the girls dressed as boys and vice-versa. Our Geography teacher was the bride.
In the northeast of Brazil, these parties are huge.

Unfortunately, i have no photos. I need to go to one of these parties soon. But you can have an idea here.

My days are quite hectic. Work is taking lots of my time (but this is actually normal) and because of the classes I'm taking, I have to prepare some good project to hand in until the middle of July.
Today, I got a paper to enroll for next semester. No more classes to attend, but a final paper to write.

I'm just a bit upset because Poison The Well is playing São Paulo in August and I won't be here.

I had the first class from my last subject for the post-graduate course I take on International Journalism. The professor is great and I'm very excited about the next classes.
It's been two years since I started this course and it's incredible how time flies. After June will be over, I'll still have to write my final paper, but I hope I'll be done with it until December.

I had a wisdom tooth removed today. It was quite painful and a bit more difficult than my dentist expected. My tooth had three roots and there was some bone in the way.
Next month I'll have the second surgery.

There is a lovely café at the top of a building on Paulista Ave. Because of the centenary from the Japanese immigration, during the holiday, they had lots of activities related to Japanese culture. And the café got a new lovely decoration.

108 at Fluff Fest 2007.

108 played São Paulo last night and it was an incredible show. Their show is pure energy.
Rethink also played. They existed from 1997 until 2001 and was one of the first bands I saw when I started going to gigs.
It was also nice to meet some people I haven't seen in a long time.
